Jean's Story

Jean Lowe GRSM (Lond), ARCM, LRAM, FISM

Member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians

Jean received early training at the Birmingham School of Music, now Birmingham Conservatoire, and was awarded the diploma of Associate of the Royal College of Music (Pianoforte Performing) at the age of only 17 years. Previously Jean was gold medallist in the ABRSM gaining the highest marks in the final grade of any practical subject in Great Britain and Ireland. Winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London, Jean studied for four years with amongst others Antony Hopkins, and graduated with the degree of Graduate of the Royal Schools of Music and gained the diploma of Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (Pianoforte – Teaching). As a soloist Jean fulfilled many and varied engagements. These included BBC radio, recitals, ensemble and concertos more notably with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. As a result of suffering a very serious arm injury and subsequent extensive surgery, Jean had to withdraw from the public platform. In due course she continued with a fulfilling career as a piano teacher whilst bringing up her family and to this day teaches piano privately at her home in Walsall. Over a period of time, Jean redeveloped her accompanying skills to the highest level possible, enabling her to fulfil many engagements as an accompanist, mainly around the Midlands. She was accompanist to the West Midlands Police Male Voice Choir for 17 years and was appointed to the Knowle Male Voice Choir in 2013.
